It has been more than 500 years since "the Age of the
Discoveries" when brave men set sail for uncharted waters in the hope of
establishing a sea route from Europe to India that would permit trade with
the Far East, without the use of the costly and unsafe Silk Road caravan
routes. Vasco da Gama did just that and brought wealth and power to the
Portuguese throne.
